VW Group acquires a stake in Navistar (International)
- The Volkswagen group, which in 2016 became the world's largest manufacturer of light vehicles (PC and LUV), has the ambition to become the world's largest medium and heavy truck manufacturer, ahead of Daimler and Volvo Trucks groups, currently respectively in first and second position. This strategy of taking the lead brought Volkswagen to take control of Swedish Scania in 2008 (purchase of 69% of the capital) and German MAN in 2011 (purchase of 56% of the capital). Scania and MAN are among the seven leading European truck manufacturers, with Mercedes, Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks, DAF and Iveco.
- Scania occupies 16% of the European market for heavy goods vehicles in 2016 and MAN 14%. The VW group which controls them now occupies 30% of the European market for heavy goods vehicles, against 25% for the Volvo Trucks group and 20% for the Daimler group. To be a global player, such as Daimler and Volvo Trucks, the VW Group must be present in at least the United States, which represents 250,000 vehicles a year (compared with 290,000 units in Europe).
- This is what prompted VW to buy 16.6% of the capital of the Navistar group that sells International trucks (15% of the US market). The truck maker is among the top seven US truck manufacturers, with Freightliner (Daimler), Kenworth (Paccar), Peterbilt (Paccar), Mack (Volvo Trucks), Volvo Trucks and Western Star (Daimler). Ultimately, VW could take full control of Navistar.

VW Group plans to launch 17 plug-in hybrid models (PHEV) by 2025

VW Group plans to launch 17 plug-in hybrid models (PHEV) by 2025
- In addition to its goal of selling one million 100% electric vehicles (BEV) per year by 2025, the Volkswagen Group expects to sell between one million and two million rechargeable hybrid vehicles (PHEV) per year by this date.
- With a dozen different BEV models that will be launched between 2017 and 2025 on the new MEB platform and the 17 PHEV models that the Volkswagen Group intends to launch over the same period, it is about thirty electrified models that the manufacturer expects to market at that time.
- Nearly 10% of its total sales will then be represented by BEVs and between 10% and 20% of its total sales will be represented by PHEVs. Between 70% and 80% of its total sales will therefore remain represented by gasoline or diesel-powered models without electrification.
- Such a proportion may seem a lot if one takes into account several law projects aiming at banning new vehicles with gasoline or diesel engines by 2030. The German Bundesrat has thus presented legislation to this effect.
- Volkswagen considers that the two main obstacles for a large-scale use of BEVs are the high price of cars and their low autonomy. However, a large-scale distribution will lower their selling price and the expected progress on the batteries will increase their autonomy.

PSA will transfer the vehicle replacing the 2008 Peugeot from Mulhouse to Zaragoza
- Details
PSA will transfer the vehicle replacing the 2008 Peugeot from Mulhouse to Zaragoza
- The new generation of the Peugeot 2008 (B SUV segment) is expected to be commercialized in 2019, as the current generation dates back to 2013 and its mid-life restyling to 2016.
- Following the agreements between GM and PSA, this future model will no longer be manufactured in France (on the PSA site in Mulhouse) but in Spain (on the GM site in Zaragoza). It is therefore a volume of nearly 200,000 cars per year that will lose the automobile industry located in France, following this transfer, which adds to the volume of nearly 150,000 cars per year that it will lose from 2017, following the transfer of the Citroën C3 to Slovakia (on the PSA site in Trnava). There will also be to add a volume of almost 100,000 cars per year due to the transfer to Slovakia of the last Peugeot 208 still manufactured in France.
- The PSA group therefore continues to relocate part of its production from France to the other European countries with lower wages.
How can PSA proceed if it wants to keep a volume of one million vehicles manufactured in France each year between 2017 and 2020?
Inovev sees two options:
How can PSA proceed if it wants to keep a volume of one million vehicles manufactured in France each year between 2017 and 2020?
Inovev sees two options:
- 1 / The increase in SUV production in France (3008, 5008, C4 Aircross, SUV Opel) = 100,000 units.
- 2 / The arrival of future DS models that could all be manufactured in France = 150 000 units.
- The balance would therefore be as follows: 450 000 vehicles lost in France and 250 000 vehicles gained in France, which could not enable to reach the one million of PSA vehicles announced to be produced in France.
- It is to note that the arrival of the Peugeot 2008 in Zaragoza will require the transfer of part of the Opel Corsa to Eisenach.

The Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio have become the best-selling cars in Russia

The Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio have become the best-selling cars in Russia
- The Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio manufactured in St. Petersburg in Russia became the best-selling cars on the Russian market in 2016. In the first nine months of the year, the Hyundai Solaris was sold at 66,602 units and the Kia Rio to 62,278 units, ahead of LadaGranta, LadaVesta, VW Polo and Renault Duster.
- The Solaris and Rio share platforms, engines and bodies. The Solaris is a 2010 Hyundai Accent slightly modified, while the Rio is the same car rebadged under the brand Kia, so very different from Rio models marketed in Europe and Korea.
- The plant in Saint-Petersburg, which produces them since 2011, has reached a peak of 237,000 vehicles manufactured in 2014 (126,000 Solaris and 111,000 Rio), and then the volume of production fell to 163,000 units in 2016 due to the fall of the Russian market in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
- Despite this decline, Solaris and Rio account together for 16% of the Russian market in 2016, compared to 17% in 2014 and 18% in 2015. It is mainly thanks to these two models that Hyundai and Kia became respectively the second and third leading brands in Russia, behind Lada (Autovaz) but ahead of Renault, Nissan and Toyota, with a market share of 10% and 10.5% respectively.
- The Hyundai-Kia group thus owns 20.5% of the Russian market in 2016.

VW unveils an E-segment SUV for US market: Atlas
- Volkswagen unveiled the Atlas, a serial version created from the CrossBlue concept presented at the 2013 Detroit Show.
This is a seven-seat E-SUV built on the MQB platform and that will be manufactured on the Chattanooga, Tenn. US site, to be sold only in North America. This model is bigger than the Touareg (Length: 5.03m versus 4.80m, width: 1.97m versus 1.89m, height: 1.76m versus 1.71m). It will be marketed in spring 2017 and replace the Phaeton sedan at the top of the Volkswagen range.

- This new model will have to compete with comparable SUVs currently available in North America, such as the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Highlander, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse, which represent a market of close to 1.8 million units 2016.
- The new Volkswagen Atlas has two petrol engines: a 4-cylinder 2.0 TSI of 238hp and a 6 cylinder 3.6 of 280hp. Following the manipulated diesel engines case, Volkswagen did not consider it necessary to equip this model with a diesel engine or even a hybrid engine.
- It is difficult to forecast a volume of sales for a model that explores a brand new segment at Volkswagen,
but Inovev thinks that 50,000 sales of Atlas per year would already be a good result.
