NAFTA Vehicle Production Analysis - Production in the NAFTA zone – 5/6

NAFTA production has increased overall, rising from 16.3 million in 2005 to 18.1 million units in 2015. But it is the breakdown between the three countries that has changed.

The production of American carmakers went from 8.2 million in 2005 to 6.6 million units in 2015. They accounted for nearly 50% of production in the region in 2005. They represented no more than 36.5 % in 2015. Japanese carmakers rose from 3.2 million to 4.3 million units in 2015, they represented less than 20% of production in the region in 2005 reaching 23.7% in 2015. FCA (Italy) increased from 0 to 2.9 million vehicles, representing in 2015 a 16% share of the production in the region. Renault-Nissan (France) increased from 1.2 to 1.8 million vehicles in 2015, a 10% share of production in the region. Korean carmakers present only in the United States, have thus passed from 100 000 to 750 000 units in 2015, reaching 4% of production in the region. German carmakers (who lost Chrysler) went from 3.2 to 1.3 million units in 2015, representing 7% of production in the region.

Despite their leadership in the region, US-controlled companies have lost their influence in the NAFTA region, especially in favour of Japanese carmakers, but also Korean carmakers and Renault-Nissan (France).
