- Between 2005 and 2015 US-controlled carmakers reduced their production in the USA and Canada to increase it in Mexico. While over the same period Japanese carmakers increased production in the three countries in the NAFTA region.
- One might think that American carmakers moved their production to Mexico but this was not the case. Indeed, between 2005 and 2015, no vehicle transfer took place between the US and Mexico. On the contrary, models were transferred from Mexico to the USA.
- Over the same period, other transfers took place between the three countries in the NAFTA region. From Canada to the USA, four vehicles were transferred (Mercedes Sprinter, Chevrolet Camaro, Buick LaCrosse, Honda Pilot) averaging 200 000 units / year. From Canada to Mexico, two vehicles were transferred (GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado) representing 200 000 units / year. US to Canada, two models were transferred (Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan) representing 200 000 units / year on average. And so from Mexico to the USA, six models have been transferred (Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, Honda Accord, Cadillac Escalade, Ford F-Series and Ford Focus) representing 180 000 units a year on average.
- Although there was no direct transfer of vehicle production between the US and Mexico, the US-owned carmakers nonetheless contributed significantly to the growth of Mexican production by transferring models produced in Canada but also by the launch in Mexico of new models never produced on American soil before. Thus B segment models (Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Aveo / Sonic) or compact SUVs (Chevrolet Trax / Captiva, Cadillac SRX and Lincoln MKZ) and Ford Fusion started their production in Mexico, representing 750 000 units / year.

- Production (PC + LUV) in Canada increased from 2.6 million to 2.4 million in 10 years, with an average decrease of less than 1% per year. However, in 2015, the downward trend has accelerated with a decline of 6.5% compared to 2014.
- In 2015, US-controlled companies (GM and Ford) represented 35% of automobile production in the country (against 49% in 2005 without Chrysler). The highlight comes from the growth of carmakers under Japanese control who have become the first producers in Canada, since Toyota and Honda groups represented 43% of the total production in the country in 2015 (against 24% in 2005). Chrysler under Italian control represented 21% of Canadian production in 2015 (0% in 2005). German carmakers, formerly Chrysler owners through Daimler, are no longer present in Canada, while they represented 27% of production in 2005.
- By volume, US-controlled companies produced 850 000 units in 2015 (1.25 million in 2005). Companies under Japanese control have produced 1.05 million vehicles (630 000 in 2005) and Chrysler (FCA - Italy) produced 500 000 vehicles against 700 000 in 2005 when he was still under the control of Daimler.
- In Canada, the stability in production (excluding times of crisis) can be explained by the fact that Japanese carmakers increased their volumes while US carmakers reduced their production.

Overview of the US Market in 2015 - Models
- The US car market is segmented as follows: 57% of LUV and 43% of PC. Overall, the PC category fell by 2.3% in 2015 while LUV increased by 12.8%.
- The analysis of the TOP 20 models sold in the LUV category reveals that SUVs body represents the majority of sales (54.7%), followed by Pick-Ups (40.5%), while MPV represent less than 5% of the market.
- In the category of PC, the Top 20 is ruled by Japanese brands (36.4% of sales - excluding Nissan), while American brand models account for 25.4% of sales (excluding Chrysler). Brands under European control (including Nissan and Chrysler) represent 21.6% of the TOP 20 and Korean brands represent 16.6% of the market.
- However in the category of LUV, and thanks to the sales of Pick-ups, US brands are the most represented in the TOP 20 (44% of sales), followed by Japanese-controlled brands (31% of sales) and European (25% Sales). It should be noted that Korean brands are absent from the TOP 20.
- By model, despite a stagnation in sales, the Toyota Camry remains the leader of the PC market. In the category of LUV, the Ford F-Series dominates the market, with a sales growth of 3.5% compared to 2014.

- Production (PC + LUV) in the US has regained its pre-crisis level from 12.1 million in 2005 to 12.2 million in 2015. In 2015, the growth in production was slightly less strong with an increase of 4% compared to 2014.
- In 2015, despite the good performance of the country's production, automotive groups under American control represent only 38% of the total production, against 52% in 2005. The Japanese-controlled carmakers have strengthened their presence on American soil, representing 23% of US production (against 21% in 2005). Following the sale of Chrysler by Daimler in 2007, German carmakers in 2015 represent only 7% of US production (15% in 2005). The Italian group FCA has significantly strengthened its presence with the acquisition of Chrysler, to represent 16% of production in 2015 (0% in 2005). The French group Renault-Nissan maintains its presence with 8% of local production (7% in 2005). Finally the Korean-controlled carmakers have developed significantly with a share of 6% of US production in 2015 against just 1% in 2005.
- By volume, the deterioration in the ranking of US carmakers end up with 4.7 million vehicles produced in 2015 against 6.3 million in 2005. Japanese carmakers (2.8 million vehicles in 2015 against 2.6 million in 2005 ) remain the second largest producer in the USA. Only Korean carmakers have experienced a real surge in production volume with 750 000 units produced in 2015 (against 100 000 in 2005). The recovery of the market and the recovery of automotive production in the US did therefore not benefit American carmakers but foreign carmakers.

- In the NAFTA region, the dominant vehicle market is of course the USA. This market was until ten years ago mainly supplied by local production and through production coming from Canada. With the growth of Mexico and its car production, the ranking of the three countries in the area is toppled.
- Indeed, the question arises about the ranking of Mexico against Canada and the United States in providing vehicles for the largest market in the region. Has Mexico become the relocation country for the production of American vehicles? Are American carmakers that usually produce vehicles in Canada, turning to Mexico? These are the questions that we seek to answer in the following analyses.
- To achieve this, we must analyse the evolution of production volumes in each country of the region, the influence of American carmakers and also analyse production transfers between the three countries in the NAFTA region.
