Inovev expects 135 000 annual sales of the new VW Touran in Europe

Europe's first and the world's second largest manufacturer, the Volkswagen Group, has unveiled the second generation of its minivan from segment C, the Touran, still based on the Golf.

This second generation benefits from the lightweight MQB modular platform that is present throughout the group’s  brands and allows it a weight loss of about sixty kilos according to the manufacturer.

The new Touran reproduces the general design of the latest Golf and Golf Sportsvan. It replaces a model dating from 2003 (twelve-year lifecycle is a long time for a car) but had managed to establish itself on the European compact MPV market.
Now that the market is significantly down (mainly victim of competition from SUVs) it will make it more difficult for the Touran to defend its positions.

Inovev however expects, 135 000 annual sales in Europe (on average), this model will be manufactured in Wolfsburg, alongside the Golf and Tiguan, Volkswagen as a result of its dominance in the European market and the legendary loyalty that customers of this brand have for its segments B, C and D.

The engines available at launch will be: three petrol engines (1.2 TSI 110 hp, 1.4 TSI 150 hp and a 1.8 TSI 180 hp) and three diesel engines (1.6 TDI 110 hp, 2.0 TDI 150 hp and a 2.0 TDI 190 hp).

Honda is terminating production of the CRV in Europe

The Honda CRV (SUV from segment C) is the second most produced SUV from segment C in the world (after the Toyota RAV4), with more than 637 000 units produced in six plants around around the world in 2014 (against 230 000 in 2005). Since 2005 several things have been observed, not only an increase in sales of this worldwide (following the global growth of SUV), but also a different production breakdown in these markets.

Thus, until 2007, the CRV was mainly made in Japan for export to all regions of the world except Europe, where the UK plant was responsible for supplying this market. The plant was also tasked for exporting additional CRVs to North America, to support the Japanese plant.

With the growing demand of SUVs in North America and China, Honda decided to build the CRV in these markets. Thus started the production of the CRV in the US, Mexico, Canada, and increased production in China. In contrast, the production of the CRV in the UK is falling: 54 000 CRV produced in 2014, while it reached 123 000 units in 2005. It is the same in Japan, where the CRV is hardly produced anymore (2 700 units in 2014).

In 2015, Honda decided to transfer the British production of the next generation CRV (to be launched in 2017) to the Canadian plant (Alliston). Therefore, the CRV sold in Europe from 2017 will all be exported from Canada. The British Honda plant (Swindon) will now be producing (from 2017) the 5-door version Civic. The Jazz will be fully supplied from China.

Renault-Nissan and Daimler to partner up on pick-up trucks

In April 2010, Renault-Nissan and Daimler groups signed an agreement for the production of vehicles, engines and transmissions/powertrains in current plants of each of the manufacturers or future common plants (including Mexico). Achievements through  this collaboration are already visible: the current Mercedes Citan, a rebadged Renault Kangoo, the new Twingo and Smart Forfour or shortly the future Daimler light utility vehicle based on the NV350.

A new project has been added to the industrial agreements between Renault-Nissan and Daimler groups. This segment of mid-size pickups is the one aimed by this agreement. Renault and Mercedes brands will now have their own pickups, derived from the next Nissan Navara (called NP300 or Frontier in some markets), which will be released this year.

This pickup will be produced under the Renault brand in Mexico starting in 2016 (at the Nissan plant of Cuernavaca, which already produces the Navara) and sold in Mexico and southern markets. It will be produced under the Mercedes brand and produced in Argentina (in the Renault plant of Cordoba) for North and South American markets.

Nissan, Renault and Mercedes pickups will also be made at the Barcelona plant for European and African markets. The objectives are to reach 120 000 vehicles a year in Barcelona for all three brands, 110 000 vehicles in Cuernavaca (Mexico) and 70 000 vehicles in Cordoba (Argentina), a total of 300 000 vehicles a year at the three sites. For Renault and Mercedes, this will be their first mid-size pickup.
