Inovev expects less than 50 000 Ford Galaxy / S-Max per year for a full year

While the European market for large MPVs becomes marginal (1% of the market in 2014 against 1.5% in 2008 and 2% in 2004), Ford intends to remain in this vehicle category by launching the third generation of the Galaxy.

This model is derived from the recent S-Max introduced earlier this year. It will therefore incorporate the whole front part of the S-Max, but differs in the length and the height to accommodate seven people.

The Galaxy was still located in the fourth position in 2014 on the market for large MPVs, behind the Volkswagen Sharan, Ford S-Max and Seat Alhambra, but ahead of the Mercedes V Class and Renault Espace.

2015 may see a change  in this ranking due to the arrival on the market of new generation Renault Espace, Ford S-Max and Ford Galaxy. The question is whether these new models will boost the market for large MPVs, since a large number of customers now purchase compact MPV or even increasingly popular SUVs. Ford hopes to sell 40 000 new Galaxy every year, against 20 000 in 2014. Inovev expects a cumulative production of 50 000 units of Galaxy / S-Max in a full year.

The new Galaxy is equipped with a 1.5 EcoBoost petrol engine of 160 hp and 240 hp 2.0 EcoBoost and 2.0 diesel TDCI 120/150/180/210 hp. This model will be manufactured in the Spanish plant of Valencia, alongside the Mondeo and S-Max that share the same platform (CD4 code), and alongside the Transit Connect and Kuga that share another platform (C1).

Hyundai to establish a third plant in India

Currently, the Korean carmaker Hyundai has two plants in India located in Chennai, each of which has a production capacity of 300 000 vehicles per year, 600 000 in total, for a production volume of 610 000 units in 2014.

The carmaker plans to produce 640 000 vehicles in India in 2015 (+ 5%) and in view of the expected growth of the Indian market over the next few years, has announced plans to create a third plant in the country (with a capacity of 300 000 vehicles a year), but not necessarily located in Chennai.

Hyundai will then have a capacity of 900 000 vehicles per year, allowing it to consolidate his second place in terms of carmakers in India (Maruti-Suzuki behind). The carmaker said that out of the 640 000 vehicles that were produced in India in 2015, 470 000 will be sold on the local market and 170 000 will be exported.

The models currently produced by Hyundai in India are: In segment A, the Santro which is the entry-level model resulting from the former Atos. It will be removed this summer after a five year life cycle. The Aeon is the model that has gradually replaced the Santro. Also in the A segment, the i10 and long Grand i10 models are positioned just above the Aeon. The Xcent is a 4-door version of the Grand i10. In segment B, we have the i20 (formerly Getz) and the compact car from segment C, the Accent. Finally, Elantra (C segment) and Sonata (D segment) , are distributed in small quantities.

Skoda and Seat will each launch 3 new SUV by 2019

In a constantly increasing European SUV market , the Volkswagen Group was set back against the Renault-Nissan group, leader of the SUV market (across all segments). Although present on several segments with the Audi brand (C, D and E segments), the main brand of the group, VW, has only two SUVs (Tiguan and Touareg). In addition to the announcements for VW and Audi brands, the group has announced its SUV product plan for Skoda and Seat brands.

By 2019 both brands will be marketing, three new SUV each in the fastest growing segments of the European market (B-C-D segments).

For Skoda, the first SUV planned for 2017, would be the replacement of the current Yeti (segment C). The second, scheduled for 2018, would be derived from the Fabia (segment B) and could therefore replace the current Roomster. The third, scheduled for 2019, would be positioned in the D segment and would combine design elements of both an SUV and a coupe, hence the Showman Coupe product name.

For Seat , the first SUV is planned for 2016 and will share the platform of the future Skoda Yeti. This C-segment model (code name: IQNA) will also be produced in the same factory as the Yeti in Kvasiny (Czech Republic). ? The second model (segment B), scheduled in 2017, will share the platform of the future Volkswagen SUV based on the Polo. This model (code name: Eroqa) will be produced in Spain like the SUV based on the Polo. The third, planned for 2018, will be positioned in D-segment. This model (code name: Teqta) should follow the concept Seat 20V20 unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The Renault plant in Oran is increasing its capacity

Six months after its launch, the Renault plant in Oran announced the doubling of its production capacity in order to produce the Renault Symbol (a Dacia Logan rebadged with the Renault name) for the local market.

This second ramp up will enable the plant to reach a production capacity of 25 000 vehicles per year and thus help the success of the Symbol in the Algerian market (the plant will not export any vehicles before 2020).

In 2014, 13 200 Renault Symbol were sold in Algeria, as the model came from the Renault factory in Bursa, Turkey. Now that Algeria assembles for the local market, demand for this model will automatically increase. Sales may reach 20 000 to 25 000 units in 2015. It can also be noted that Renault also sold 24 500 Dacia Logan in Algeria in 2014.

Since the Dacia Logan and Renault Symbol are actually the same model with two different logos, it is very likely that demand will intensify for the Symbol while it will decrease for the Logan.

Renault therefore expects a production of 25 000 Symbol in 2015, 45 000 in 2016, 55 000 in 2017, 65 000 in 2018 and 75 000 in 2019. Renault expects to export the Symbol from 2019, which suggests that in that year, 75 000 Symbol will be sold in Algeria, while the total Renault Symbol / Dacia Logan sold in 2014 stood at less than 38 000 units. Despite changes in the Algerian market, long term growth should help achieve this target.

Fiat presents the Aegean, successor to the Bravo and Linea

Fiat presented the successor to the Bravo and Linea. With a length of 4.50m, the sedan model from C-segment , called Aegeagoes on sale in Turkey from November 2015 and in Europe from 2016 onwards. The vehicle range will be completed next year with a shorter hatchback version to replace the Bravo and an estate version that will replace the break Stilo that was terminated in 2008. The platform is the same as the Alfa-Romeo Giulietta and its derivatives for the US and Chinese markets (Dodge Dart, Fiat Viaggio / Ottima).

The production of the Aegean will be concentrated in the Fiat Tofas plant in Bursa, Turkey. This model announces the come back of the Fiat brand on the C segment market, after removing the Bravo last year. The Linea was in turn derived from a segment B model, the Fiat Punto.

The Bursa plant has a capacity of 400 000 vehicles per year, while it produced only 230 000 units in 2014, and it will lose the production of the Opel Combo, the Citroën Nemo and Peugeot Bipper at the end of 2016 since GM and PSA announced the end of their agreements with Fiat on these vehicles.

The Italian carmaker can expect at most a production of 200 000 units annually for the different variants of the Aegea, the 200 000 additional units being assigned to the production of different variants of the Fiorino and Doblo will continue to be assembled in this plant.
