The European market has declined by 6,6% over the first five months of 2013

On the cumulative first five months of the year, the European market (27 countries) declined by 6.6% (compared to the first five months of 2012), with a volume of 5,261,392 passenger cars registered.

Even though the month of April could suggest gradual improvement, the European market recorded a much worse outcome than expected in May 2013 (-6.2% compared to 2012), to 1,081,255 units.

Most European countries experienced a decline in May and over those five months. Only Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Great Britain and Estonia grew over the cumulative first five months of 2013.

As regards to carmakers, only two groups progressed on the cumulative first five months of 2013 compared to the same period last year: 2.4% for Daimler (Mercedes) and 10.9% for Tata Motors (Jaguar / Land Rover). These two good scores highlight the success of the Mercedes Class A and the Land Rover.

Within declining groups , some brands are still able to pull their game, as Dacia (+17.3% over five months), Honda (11.7%), Seat (9.0%), Mazda (+6.8%) and Kia (2.6%).

Renault-Nissan unveils its first modular plateform

Following the example of Volkswagen and PSA, Renault-Nissan has unveiled its modular platform. By 2020, over 75% of vehicles produced by Renault and Nissan will use one of three families of common architectures (CMF) developed by the Alliance.

This strategy is similar to that used by Volkswagen named MQB, is called CMF (Common Module Family) in Renault-Nissan, and is to create common architectures for vehicles of different segments.

The first CMF concern vehicles from segments C and D and will be opened by Nissan by the end of 2013 with its new Rogue, Qashqai and X-Trail. The first Renault vehicles (Espace, Scenic and Laguna) will be marketed late 2014 and eight other Renault models will emerge later with the first CMF.

A total of 14 Renault and Nissan vehicles represent in the long term a volume of 1.6 million units per year worldwide. Between 2015 and 2016, two other families of CMF will be deployed to cover the A and B segments (including the Dacia) and E and F segments.

Today, Renault and Nissan have twenty different platforms and the group's goal is to reduce by half this number, three of which represent more than 75% of the vehicles produced by the group.

The Prius C helped to double the Japanese market for hybrids

The Toyota Prius was the first hybrid (gas + electricity) standard. The first generation was launched in 1997, the second in 2003 and third in 2009.

The success of this model in Japan and in the world has started mainly with the third generation. Sales of the Prius in Japan increased from 73,000 units in 2008 to 209,000 in 2009 and 316,000 in 2010, 253,000 in 2011 (year of the tsunami) and of 318,000 units in 2012. The 2012 figures include the new version break / minivan called the Prius Plus (Prius Alpha in Japan).

But the hybrid novelty of 2012 was the Prius C (Prius Compact) called Aqua in Japan. This model of 4 meters long (against the Prius 4.50 meters) was a huge success in Japan last year with 266,000 sales, while the model was starting up stage.

This success has led to the doubling of the Japanese market for hybrids, 337 000 units in 2011 to 664,000 in 2012, a doubling of sales of the Prius models range from 253 000 units in 2011 to 584,000 in 2012. Toyota decided two years ago to develop a Prius range from the original model, which means that we can expect new variations in two or three years.

VW will produce the Skoda Rapid in Russia in 2014

The Volkswagen Group has since 2007 a plant in Russia (Kaluga). This plant produces the VW Polo, VW Tiguan, VW Touareg and the Skoda Octavia, along with the Skoda Fabia and Skoda Yetiall these models are sold locally. The Kaluga plant produced 180,000 vehicles in 2012.

The Skoda Rapid will arrive on the Russian market in 2014. The lack of capacity of the Kaluga plant to manufacture it (capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year has already been greatly exceeded in 2012), a solution has been  found through its agreement with the Russian carmaker GAZ (which manufactures the Volga).

Volkswagen can now use the GAZ factory located in Nizhny Novgorod thathasn't produced anything since 2010 and has a capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year.

The group will then move the production of the Octavia from Kaluga to Nizhny Novgorod and the Skoda Rapid will be produced on the site of Kaluga. These transfers will be effective between autumn 2013 and spring 2014.

In 2012, Volkswagen sold 180,863 vehicles in Russia including 99,206 Polo, Tiguan and Touareg from Kaluga and over 81,657 vehicles from abroad. Skoda last year sold 99,062 vehicles in Russia including 80,348 Fabia, Octavia Yeti from Kalugaand over 18,714 from abroad.
