The Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Rifter and Opel Combo will be 100% electric in PC version
The Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo, launched in 2018, totaled 280,000 units produced in 2021, mainly from Spain (Vigo) and Portugal (Mangualde). They are manufactured in utility vehicle (LUV) and passenger vehicle (PC) versions. Utility versions represent 80% of all these models, or 223,500 units in 2021, with other versions representing only 56,500 units last year.

These models are equipped with petrol, diesel and 100% electric engines. In 2021, electric motors accounted for less than 5% of sales for all of these models.

However, the Stellantis group has decided to only offer the 100% electric version on these models in the passenger car version from January 1, 2022, which seems quite audacious given the current demand. Are we going to witness – as with the Smarts which have gone from all-thermal to all-electric – a drop in sales of the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo in passenger car version? It is quite possible, especially since the fall in sales of these models has already started between 2019 and 2021, when they were still available in three different engines. In the scenario envisaged by Inovev, it will no longer be 56,500 annual sales of these models, but probably less than 10,000, because the price is much higher in the electric version than in the thermal version. This kind of decision undoubtedly contributes to the decline of the automobile markets as a whole, the manufacturers now betting more on profitability (linked to the high prices of vehicles) and no longer on volumes.

Renault-Samsung plant in Korea will produce Geely models in 2024
For about ten years, the Korean plant in Busan which belongs to Renault and which manufactures Renault-Samsungs for the Korean market but also some Renaults for the European market has been experiencing difficulties, facing the domination of the Hyundai-Kia group which owns 72% of the Korean market. Renault-Samsung Korea's sales do not exceed 4% of this market.

The French manufacturer tried to produce Renault Koleos and Latitudes there for the European market, then Nissan X-Trails for the American market. An attempt to export its cars from Korea to China ended in failure. Calibrated to produce 300,000 cars per year, the Busan plant exceeded 250,000 units per year only once, that was in 2010, and production volume then fell to 150,000 units in 2012, then 100,000 in 2015.

Since that date, production has been around 100,000 to 150,000 per year depending on the year. In 2021, the Busan plant benefited from the export of 40,000 Renault Arkana to Europe and the sale in Korea of 40,000 Samsung XM3 (its twin brother). These two models represent 60% of production at the Busan plant. But this success is random and will only last a few years.

This is why Renault has decided to completely change its strategy regarding the Busan plant, which is operating at less than half capacity. From 2024, the Busan plant will produce thermal and hybrid vehicles based on Geely models (the largest independent Chinese manufacturer). These models will adopt the AMC platform developed at Volvo in Sweden, as well as the hybrid engines of the Chinese manufacturer. They will be marketed in Korea and then exported throughout Asia.

The Indian market fell by 1.5% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Indian automobile market (PC+UV) increased by 28% in 2021, after having fallen by 23% in 2020, which means that this market is almost back to the level of 2019 (-1.5%). India registered 3,759,540 vehicles in 2021, compared to 2,937,803 in 2020 and 3,817,000 in 2019. The level reached in 2021 remains however still lower than the level of the years 2017-2018 which had exceeded 4 million units per year. Given India's low motorization rate, despite the large number of vehicles circulating in major cities, the Indian market is expected to continue to grow over the next few years, especially as the rate of vehicle electrification remains extremely low in the country (0.1% of registrations) and thus prevents a sharp increase in the average price of the models offered which would reduce demand.

By manufacturer, the Suzuki-Maruti group remains largely the Indian market leader in 2021, with 44% of total registrations, which marks a clear improvement compared to 2020 when its share did not exceed 42%.

Largely behind, since it achieves only half of Suzuki-Maruti's sales, the Hyundai-Kia group (22% market share) manages to sell twice as many vehicles as its pursuer the Tata group (11% market share). Marlet). Mahindra (7%), Renault-Nissan (5%), Toyota (4%), Honda (3%) and Volkswagen (2%) follow.

The top-selling models in the Indian market in 2021 were the Suzuki Wagon R (164,122 units), Suzuki Swift (159,391 units), Suzuki Baleno (157,783 units) and Suzuki Alto (155,063 units). Suzuki therefore places four of its models in the top four sales.

The Chinese market increased by 2.0% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Chinese market (PC+UV) increased by 3.8% in 2021 compared to 2020 and by 2.0% compared to 2019. It is one of the rare countries to see its registrations increase between 2019 and 2021. China registered 26,274,820 vehicles in 2021 compared to 25,309,069 in 2020 and 25,769,000 in 2019. This result is all the more remarkable given that the global automotive market fell by almost 10% between 2019 and 2021. Despite this good result, the level reached in 2021, even if it is higher than that of 2019, remains lower than that of the years 2016-2017-2018 which had exceeded 28 million units per year. However, it seems that this level will be reached again in 2022 or 2023.

The Volkswagen group remains the leader in the Chinese passenger car market, with a 14% market share, ahead of the GM groups (12%), Toyota (8%), Honda (7%), Geely (7%) which remains the first. Chinese manufacturer excluding joint ventures. But Geely is now closely followed by his compatriot Changan (6%) who made a spectacular comeback last year. Renault-Nissan (6%), Great Wall (5%), Chery (4%), SAIC with its brands MG-Roewe-Maxus (4%) and BYD (3%) follow.

Chinese manufacturers occupied 39.5% of the Chinese passenger car market in 2021, a slight increase compared to 2019 (39%). Including commercial vehicles, they occupied 46% of the Chinese market last year.

Top-selling models in China in 2021 were Wuling Hongguang Mini EV (427,685 units), Volkswagen Lavida (392,056 units), Great Wall Haval H6 (365,930 units), Toyota Corolla (319,673 units) , the Tesla Model 3 (279,882 units) and the Buick Excelle GT (263,038 units). All-electric cars (BEV) accounted for 2,751,755 sales (13% of the PC market), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) 597,752 units (3%) and non-plug-in hybrids (HEV) 515,705 units (2% ).

The Korean market fell by 4.3% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Korean vehicle market (PC+UV) fell by 8.8% in 2021 compared to 2020 and by 4.3% compared to 2019. South Korea registered 1,707,959 vehicles in 2021, compared to 1,873 764 in 2020 and 1,784,000 in 2019. Given the evolution of this market since 2015, this market seems saturated. South Korea had been a rare country (along with Turkey) to see its market progress in 2020, and the year 2021 marks a kind of upside-down catch-up, because the surplus of vehicles purchased in 2020 was not bought in 2021.

As a result, the level reached in 2021 returns to the level of the years 2014-2015. The sales record remains that of 2020.

In this context, the Hyundai-Kia group remains largely the leader in the Korean market, with a market share of 72% in 2021 (a share higher than that of the Toyota group in Japan, which is already extremely large). Far behind, the German Premium manufacturers BMW (6%) and Mercedes (5%) take second and third place in the Korean market, ahead of Renault-Samsung, which alone represents the Renault-Nissan group (4%). This group lost two places, which may explain the new strategy that the manufacturer's management has just put in place, namely to now produce Chinese models of the Geely brand from 2024.

Ssangyong is no longer among the six largest manufacturers, its market share having been halved in 2021. This struggling manufacturer has just been acquired from Mahindra by Edison Motors (manufacturer of electric buses) to attempt a final rescue. Top-selling models in Korea in 2021 are Hyundai Grandeur (89,084 units), Kia Carnival (73,503 units), Hyundai Avante (71,036 units), Kia Sorento (69,934 units) and Hyundai Sonata (63,109 units).
