Renault adds a fourth SUV to its range: the new Koleos

Renault has added a fourth SUV to its range: the new Koleos, which uses the platform of the Nissan X-Trail and joins a range already containing the Captur, Kaptur and Kadjar. The new Koleos is the largest of Renault's SUV range (4.67 m), and will be manufactured both in South Korea (by Renault-Samsung) and in China (by Renault-Dongfeng).

The name Koleos has been retained as the previous generation of this model (2007-2016) was the best selling Renault model  in China over the last ten years. It will be sold in China and Europe and will be the crowning piece of a Renault range which already contains many top-end vehicles (Talisman, Espace).

In China, it will be the second model produced by Dongfeng, after the Kadjar, which was launched at the start of the year.

It will be a global competitor among segment D SUVs alongside the Nissan X-Trail (Rogue), Audi Q5, BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Volvo XC60, Jaguar F-Pace, Mercedes GLC, Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.

400 000 units of the older Koleos have been manufactured, with 200 000 of them being sold in China, 100 000 in Europe and 50 000 in Korea. The new Koleos aims to surpass this figure within five years of sales, which works out to a minimum rate of 80 000 vehicles per year.

It will be easier for it to meet or even surpass this level, as it will be manufactured at not one, but two sites, unlike the old Koleos. The Samsung-branded version should be unveiled soon.

Chinese exports have been in decline since 2013

Chinese automobile exports fell to 755 000 vehicles in 2015, representing a return to 2008 levels. However, while in 2008 these exports represented 9% of Chinese automobile production, they represented only 3% in 2015. Chinese automobile production effectively tripled between 2008 and 2015.

This production is primarily intended for the domestic market, which absorbed 24.5 million vehicles in 2015, and which will absorb a million more each year, due to sturdy demand. The hundreds of thousands of vehicles exported since 2012 therefore do not have a significant effect on Chinese automobile production.

The situation would be markedly different if the domestic market were sluggish or in decline. At the current moment, it is logical to assert that exports are not a priority for Chinese manufacturers, who already have plenty to occupy them in the domestic market, where results have been positive, as they are expanding their share of the market at the expense of foreign manufacturers.

Although exports are not currently a priority for Chinese manufacturers, they could become one soon, especially in light of a predicted tapering off of growth in the Chinese market over the next few years.

This has led Chinese manufacturers to open R&D centres in Europe in order to be in a better position to prepare for large-scale investment in the European market . But this process should take many years.

Beijing Auto Show 2016

The Beijing Motor Show 2016 was a chance for Chinese manufacturers to demonstrate their know-how and to unveil a number of new SUV models, both in conceptual and definitive form (at marketing phase). SUVs are the vehicle category which currently enjoys the fastest growing sales in China (exports are no longer a priority for Chinese manufacturers: see next article).

Inovev counted 25 SUVs among the 48 notable new vehicles at the Beijing Motor Show 2016, making up just over half of the new vehicles, but representing only 29.5% of car sales in China in 2015. Of these 25 SUVs presented in Beijing, 10 are segment C, 7 are segment D, 4 are segment B and 4 are segment E.

Inovev also counted 17 new sedans at the Beijing Motor Show, making up around a third of the new vehicles, and representing 55.5% of car sales in China in 2015. Of these 17 sedans presented in Beijing, 6 are segment E, 5 are segment C, 2 are segment D, 2 are segment B, 1 is segment A and 1 is segment F.

The remaining 6 notable vehicles belong to the categories of sports car, minivan, minibus and MPV, which altogether represented 15% of car sales in China in 2015.

Of these 48 new vehicles, around forty will go on sale between May and December 2016.

Borgward sets itself the target of selling 500 000 vehicles globally in 2020

The manufacturer Borgward, which has been revived by Chinese manufacturer Beiqi Foton (a subsidiary of BAIC), presented two new vehicles at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2016. These were two segment C compact SUVs (4.50 m in length), enlarging the manufacturer's range, which currently contains a segment D SUV, the BX7 (4.70m in length).

Borgward is the name of a Premium German brand which had disappeared in 1961 and which manufactured 90 000 vehicles a year in the 1950s, at a factory in Bremen, in the north of Germany.

The name Borgward was purchased some years ago by Beiqi Foton, which is now in the process of developing a totally new range of vehicles under this name, to be manufactured at a BAIC group factory in Beijing.

The BX7 is already being produced and sold in China. The BX5 and BX6 will go on sale in 2017. Other models will form part of the range (likely sedans) and will go on sale in 2018 and 2019.

Borgward's vehicle range will go on sale in Europe starting from 2017. All of these vehicles will use a platorm derived from the former Saab 9.3, as BAIC has bought the rights to older Saab models.

The Chinese group has set itself a target of selling 500 000 Borgward vehicles globally in 2020, as soon as the range consists of six different models. The construction of a factory in Germany is planned in the mid term.
